The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has urged Ghanaians to use their votes to punish politicians who fail to take decisive action against illegal mining (galamsey).
Speaking in an interview on Thursday, September 18, 2025, GMA President Dr. Frank Serebour said the Association’s campaign is aimed at protecting public health and reducing the spread of preventable diseases caused by polluted water sources and environmental destruction.
Dr. Serebour explained that while some have called for strike action, political pressure at the ballot box remains the most effective tool for forcing change.
“When the GMA asked political parties to declare their positions and sign a pact, we wanted clarity on where they stand. Some called for strike action, but strikes aren’t sustainable. The only consequence politicians fear is electoral loss.
My message is: if you don’t fight it, we’ll boot you out,” he warned.
He added that the GMA will continue to advocate, mobilise communities, and demand reforms, but stressed that sustained citizen action is critical to ending the galamsey menace.
