At the inauguration ceremony of the Common Core Programme (CCP) workshop for teachers of the various Junior High Schools (JHS) in the Tain District, the Member of Parliament for Tain Constituency, Hon. Sulemana Adama (Hon Ramzy) called on the need for stakeholders of our educational enterprise to put our hands together to solve the current mess in the Ghana Education Service.
The Ghana Education Service, (GES) introduced the New Standard-Based Curriculum in 2019/2020 academic year at the primary level, almost three years now teachers are finding it difficult to adequately implement it as there are no textbooks to ensure effective teaching and learning. Efforts and advocacy made to put the government and authorities on their toes have proved futile with no assurance of having one neither today nor tomorrow. He therefor urged teachers not to remain quiet but be very vocal as they used to be previously to have the good things done for effective teaching and learning to take place.
He again talked about the non-availability of a stable academic calendar. “From the onset of the Free Senior High School, there hadn’t been a stable calendar for the JHS which has creeped into that of the Basic School. The existence of one will help teachers and students to prepare well towards the re-opening of schools hence it must be handled”.
Also, the Hon. MP, Hon. Ramzy expressed his displeasure about the fact that Capitation Grant to schools is in arrears of four trenches, two each for the 2019/2020 and 2020/2021 academic years. This has affect the administrative work of headteachers managing our basic education. I will therefore call on all stakeholders to seek remedy to this canker affecting effective teaching and learning as well as administrative work.
Finally, he hammered on why forty-four thousand (44,000) teachers left the classrooms only in 2021. He call on leadership to get into why they left and how they will be replaced to improve upon the already low Pupil to Teacher ratio.
The Member of Parliament used the opportunity to call on teachers to cooperate with the facilitators to equip them with the needed knowledge to impact same on our pupils for a better future.
