Minister of State in Charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has strongly dismissed claims that President John Dramani Mahama is scheming to seek a third presidential term, describing the allegations as baseless and illogical.
His response follows assertions by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) that the President is harbouring a hidden third-term ambition, citing social media posts from some National Democratic Congress (NDC) supporters urging him to extend his tenure beyond the two-term constitutional limit.
Appearing on Channel One TV’s Face to Face with host Umaru Sanda Amadu on Tuesday, December 9, Mr. Kwakye Ofosu rejected the claims outright.
“The NPP have whipped themselves into a needless frenzy,” he said. “President Mahama has stated emphatically that he will respect the Ghanaian Constitution. He is a consummate democrat, so there’s no third term anywhere for him or any other person as far as the constitution is concerned.
“Anyone can say what they want. The fact that some people have gone on Facebook to say he should go for a third term doesn’t mean that will happen. The man himself has said he’s not interested.”
He urged the opposition to refrain from what he described as needless speculation and political distraction.
“So the NPP should stop wasting their time—and everybody’s time—by pretending to be angry. It’s an absurd fantasy they’re getting themselves into. The President has not expressed any intent, and any talk about it is a complete waste of everybody’s time,” he added.
President Mahama has repeatedly affirmed his commitment to Ghana’s two-term limit. On August 27, during a bilateral meeting with Singaporean President Tharman Shanmugaratnam as part of a three-day state visit, he reiterated that he would not appear on the 2028 ballot.
He emphasised that stepping aside after his tenure would help reinforce fiscal discipline and curb the pervasive election-year overspending that has contributed to Ghana’s recurring economic challenges.
