Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has urged government to ensure that the 2026 Budget becomes a turning point for Ghana’s economic transformation and a clear pathway toward self-reliance.
Addressing Members of Parliament at a Post-Budget Workshop in Accra, the Speaker said the national budget remains the strongest indicator of how well a country is managed, stressing that Ghana must use the 2026 fiscal plan to redefine its economic direction.
“A common refrain echoes across Africa: ‘Africa is not poor; it is poorly managed.’ And the budget is the clearest expression of that management,” Bagbin noted. “At this pivotal moment, our budget must serve as a primary instrument for transforming Ghana’s economic paradigm.”
He emphasized that the policies outlined in the 2026 Budget must prioritize building a resilient and domestically driven economy capable of reducing Ghana’s long-standing reliance on external assistance.
“The policies contained in this budget must steer us away from dependency towards a resilient, domestically driven economy. Honourable members, data tells a clear and urgent story. Reform cannot wait,” he stressed.
Bagbin’s comments add to ongoing national discussions on the government’s proposed fiscal measures and long-term strategies aimed at stabilizing the economy and promoting sustainable growth.
