Pius Enam Hadzide, spokesperson for New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful Dr. Bryan Acheampong, has revealed that his boss gave GH¢5 million to Kennedy Agyapong to encourage him to join the NPP’s 2024 campaign efforts after the party’s presidential primaries.
Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM, Mr. Hadzide said the gesture was part of Dr. Acheampong’s efforts to promote unity within the party following the tense flagbearer contest.
“Bryan Acheampong doesn’t have a problem with anyone in this party. He has no problem with Dr. Bawumia. He has not said that if he doesn’t win, he will frustrate others. So, if Bryan wins, it won’t be difficult for him and his supporters to bring everyone together,” he stated.
He further disclosed that after Kennedy Agyapong’s defeat in the 2023 NPP presidential primaries, the Assin Central MP appeared reluctant to campaign for the party in the 2024 elections.
“After the 2023 primaries, when Kennedy lost, Bryan Acheampong convinced him to go out and campaign. He told Kennedy that maybe you’re just coming out of a contest, so maybe you’re not financially strong. So, he gave Kennedy GH¢5 million and said, ‘Take this and step out to campaign,’” Hadzide revealed.
He clarified that the gesture was not a payoff but a show of solidarity and goodwill to ensure that the party remained united and energized ahead of the 2024 elections.
“To be fair to Kennedy, he had just come out of a campaign, so asking him to go out and campaign again, maybe he didn’t have the money. So, Bryan gave him GH¢5 million to help him go and campaign,” he added.
The revelation has sparked conversations within political circles about intra-party relations and campaign financing in the ruling NPP, particularly as the party prepares for its next leadership contest.
