President John Dramani Mahama has cautioned that Ghana will not serve as a safe haven for cybercriminals engaged in romance scams, stressing that offenders will be extradited and prosecuted under international law.
Speaking at the launch of Cyber Security Awareness Month in Accra on Wednesday, October 1, President Mahama said Ghana is strengthening collaboration with global partners to clamp down on online fraud.
“We’ve been collaborating with our international partners. When evidence is gathered and it is proven that people are involved in romance scams, using our extradition treaties, we ship the culprits back,” he stated.
He emphasised that existing extradition treaties will be strictly applied, ensuring suspects face justice in jurisdictions where their crimes were committed.
“So we will continue to collaborate with all our global partners. Anybody involved in romance scams, whether you are a foreigner or a Ghanaian citizen, we will hand you over to be tried and punished accordingly,” the President warned.
Mahama stressed that the move is not only to safeguard citizens but also to protect Ghana’s international reputation as a responsible digital partner.
