Residents of Ataso in the Atwima Mponua District of the Ashanti Region are appealing to government and benevolent organisations to come to their aid with a health facility, citing the dangerous conditions they endure to access medical care.
During a community tour by Adom News, residents recounted how patients in critical condition are often transported on motorbikes (okada) or tricycles, locally known as aboboya, to nearby towns due to the deplorable road network.
In extreme emergencies, when no motorbike or tricycle is available, patients are strapped to wooden structures and carried to Kotokum, Nkawie, or Toase to seek treatment—a situation they describe as life-threatening.
The community’s local unit committee has secured a parcel of land for the construction of a Community-Based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compound. However, the project has been stalled by a protracted land dispute.
Kwame Ben, Vice Chairman of the Unit Committee, urged stakeholders to urgently intervene to resolve the land issue and commence construction.
“We need at least a CHPS compound because people die while being rushed to the nearest health facility,” he lamented.
Residents say that without immediate support from government, NGOs, or philanthropists, the lack of healthcare access will continue to claim lives in the Ataso community.
