The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has ordered the Acting Chief Executive Officer of Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Dr. Yakubu Seidu Adam, to refund GH¢113,000 to the state within 90 days after the facility failed to recover the amount from negligent officers.
- The judgment debt arose from two separate cases:
- The death of a patient following a medication overdose.
The exhumation and reburial of a body after a mix-up in mortal remains.
During a PAC hearing on Monday, September 29, Ranking Member Samuel Atta-Mills queried why the hospital had not retrieved the money despite earlier recommendations.
“We recommended that the Acting Chief Executive Officer should recover the total amount of GH¢113,000 from the officers whose negligence occasioned the payment of judgment debt…failing which the Acting Chief Executive Officer should pay. Have you done that?” Atta-Mills asked.
Dr. Adam admitted that the hospital had not recovered the funds, citing delays, prompting the committee to issue a firm directive.
“Our Chief Executive Officer, we give you 90 days to pay this GH¢113,000,” Atta-Mills stated.
The PAC’s action reinforces its commitment to financial accountability and signals that institutional lapses leading to avoidable compensation payments will not go unpunished.
