An Accra court has sentenced two men to three months in prison with hard labour for illegally dumping refuse near the Accra Post Office.
The convicts, Albert Okai and Amoako Darko, pleaded guilty to the offence and were each fined 50 penalty units (GH¢600). After failing to pay the fines, they were ordered to serve their sentences at the Nsawam Medium Security Prison.
A third accused, Michael Osei, pleaded not guilty and has been remanded for one week pending further court proceedings.
Following the ruling, Accra Mayor Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey said the convictions underscore the city’s commitment to enforcing sanitation by-laws. He warned that similar punitive measures will be applied to anyone caught dumping refuse indiscriminately, stressing that strict enforcement is crucial to protect public health and keep the city clean.
