Former Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has renewed his pledge to establish a structured, long-term welfare system to support party delegates and grassroots members.
Addressing current and former constituency executives and ex-government officials during his two-day campaign tour of the Eastern Region, Dr. Bawumia said a robust welfare strategy is critical to sustaining party members whether the NPP is in or out of government.
“An army marches on its stomach,” he emphasised, warning that neglecting the party’s base would undermine its chances of victory. He revealed that research after the 2024 elections showed many members abstained from voting due to a lack of support, a trend he vowed to reverse.
As part of his proposed reforms, Dr. Bawumia promised to introduce targeted welfare policies and create a Welfare Desk at every party level to collect data and ensure fair distribution of resources.
“No more adidigya or menyaa hwee,” he declared, pledging to end the feeling of abandonment among grassroots members.
He assured that resources would be channelled directly to the grassroots to enhance party work, promote inclusion, and strengthen the NPP’s electoral machinery.
Dr. Bawumia’s visit, part of his preparations for the January 31, 2026 presidential primaries, has so far secured the backing of 15 out of the 23 NPP Members of Parliament in the region.
