Attorney General Dr. Dominic Ayine has urged professional and legal bodies to avoid inviting foreign interference into Ghana’s constitutional and judicial affairs.
Speaking at the Ghana Bar Association’s Annual Conference in Wa on Monday, September 15, Dr. Ayine acknowledged the value of international collaborations for professional development but cautioned that such partnerships should not extend to influencing Ghana’s constitutional politics.
“We should avoid the temptation of foreign interference in our internal constitutional processes. Collaboration with foreign associations is acceptable for professional knowledge-sharing, but it must end there. Sovereignty resides with the people of Ghana, and government powers are exercised in their name,” he stated.
His remarks come after the Bar Council of England and Wales and the Commonwealth Lawyers Association called on President John Mahama to reconsider the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, urging her immediate reinstatement and full transparency in the disciplinary process.
Dr. Ayine’s comments reaffirm the government’s stance that Ghanaian constitutional processes must remain under the control of its citizens, despite international concerns over judicial developments.
