FixTheCountry movement has announced plans to stage an anti-galamsey protest in Accra to highlight the worsening environmental damage caused by illegal mining.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, September 15, 2025, the group’s convenor, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, revealed that a vigil will take place at Revolution Square on Sunday, September 21, followed by a public march on Monday, September 22, a statutory holiday.
Barker-Vormawor described the fight against galamsey as both a moral and spiritual duty, stressing that protecting the environment is a responsibility entrusted to all Ghanaians.
“Our duty to safeguard the environment does not begin or end with elections. This fight is bigger than partisan politics,” he stated.
He urged citizens from all backgrounds to join the demonstration and show commitment to preserving the country’s water bodies, farmlands, and natural resources.
FixTheCountry has consistently criticised both past and present governments for failing to tackle galamsey effectively, often pointing to political interference as a major obstacle. Barker-Vormawor said the planned protest is aimed at channeling public frustration into concrete civic action.
