Ghana has fallen six places in the 2025 Global Peace Index (GPI), ranking 61st globally and slipping to 7th in Sub-Saharan Africa, according to the latest report by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP).
The new rankings place Ghana behind Mauritius (26th globally), Botswana (43rd), Namibia (50th), The Gambia (55th), Sierra Leone (57th), and Madagascar (59th) in terms of peacefulness.
This marks a continuation of Ghana’s steady decline in recent years. In 2024, the country ranked 55th globally and 4th in Sub-Saharan Africa, after placing 51st in 2023. The long-term trend shows a sharper slide from 38th in 2021 to 61st in 2025.
Analysts note that the decline reflects growing domestic tensions and wider regional instability.
The IEP report also highlighted that Sub-Saharan Africa recorded an average peace score drop of 0.17% in 2025, driven by escalating conflicts. Globally, peace has fallen to its lowest level since the index began in 2008.
