The National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for Akwatia, Bernard Bediako, has expressed confidence that the upcoming by-election is already secured for his party.
In an interview with Channel One TV on Saturday, August 23, Mr. Bediako admitted that the NDC’s campaign took off late due to internal primaries and the tragic helicopter crash in the Ashanti Region, which claimed eight lives. However, he insisted that the momentum has now shifted decisively in favour of the NDC.
“We didn’t start our campaign early as compared to the other side because of the tragedy that hit us and the primaries we had to go through. They didn’t, so we lost some time. But I can assure you that the tables have turned completely, and they know it. God willing, it is a done deal for me and the NDC,” he declared.
The by-election will see Mr. Bediako, who also serves as the NDC’s constituency secretary, face off against Solomon Kwame Asumadu, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) constituency treasurer.
Meanwhile, Dr. Palgrave Boakye-Danquah, former Government Spokesperson on Governance and Security, expressed optimism that the NPP would retain the seat to honour the late Ernest Kumi, the former MP whose death necessitated the election.
The Electoral Commission (EC) has fixed Tuesday, September 2, 2025, as the date for the Akwatia by-election.
