The National Youth Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Salam Mustapha, has expressed doubts about the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) conducting the forthcoming Akwatia by-election in a fair and transparent manner.
Speaking on Channel One Newsroom on Tuesday, August 19, he alleged that the NDC has a history of violence and intimidation, suggesting that the party could deploy thugs during the September 2 poll to intimidate NPP supporters and reduce voter turnout.
He recalled that before the Ablekuma North elections, some NDC members threatened retaliation for incidents that occurred in Ayawaso West-Wuogon, and such threats were later carried out. Based on this, he argued, the NDC cannot be trusted.
“I know the NDC very well; they are not honest. When they claim they won’t bring people in, it turns out otherwise—you will still find their ‘azoka’ boys there. From my experience, I can confidently say they will bring thugs,” he said.
Mustapha further stressed that while the NPP will continue to work with the Ghana Police Service to ensure a peaceful by-election, the party will also take steps to protect its members.
