he Electoral Commission (EC) has confirmed that the printing of ballot papers for the upcoming Akwatia parliamentary by-election will begin on Wednesday, August 20, 2025.
The announcement was made after the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) convened a high-level meeting with political parties to discuss security arrangements and measures to prevent electoral violence ahead of the poll.
EC Assures Readiness
Speaking to the media after the meeting, the EC’s Director of Electoral Services, Benjamin Bano-Bioh, stated:
“As of now, we are going to start the printing of ballots from tomorrow. Procurement has already been done. We have procured all the materials required for the election, so we are ready.”
He assured stakeholders that the Commission is fully prepared to deliver on its mandate and called on all political parties to play by the rules to ensure a peaceful election.
Background to the By-Election
The by-election was triggered by the sudden passing of Akwatia MP, Ernest Yaw Kumi, in July 2025. The late legislator, who represented the New Patriotic Party (NPP), died unexpectedly, leaving his seat vacant and prompting the EC to set in motion preparations for a by-election.
Security Measures
At Tuesday’s engagement, the IGP outlined critical security strategies to protect voters, candidates, and electoral officials during the exercise. The Police Service has pledged to collaborate closely with political parties to maintain order and prevent any disturbances.
The EC reaffirmed its commitment to conducting the by-election in a professional, transparent, and peaceful manner, assuring the people of Akwatia of a credible process.
