National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has taken a dig at Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, suggesting the current Minority Leader is unknowingly aiding the NDC’s political fortunes.
Speaking in a recent interview shared on social media platform X on July 29, 2025, Asiedu Nketiah said the Effutu MP’s conduct in Parliament has consistently favoured the NDC’s public image, describing him as an accidental asset to the party’s 2028 election campaign.
“Afenyo-Markin has now become the NDC’s campaign manager. We’re praying he remains in his position until the next election because everything he does benefits us,” he said in Twi.
He argued that Afenyo-Markin’s approach has inadvertently undermined the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), while boosting the NDC’s appeal among Ghanaians.
Touching on the leadership changes in Parliament ahead of the 2024 election, Asiedu Nketiah said the NPP made a strategic error by replacing Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu with Afenyo-Markin, allegedly in response to similar changes made by the NDC.
He criticised the NPP for mimicking the NDC’s internal reshuffle without considering the underlying context.
“If you copy someone, the conditions must be the same to get the same outcome. Our circumstances were different. They copied us without understanding, and it backfired,” he noted.
Asiedu Nketiah also referenced recent claims by Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, who attributed his removal as Majority Leader to the NDC’s reshuffle, further reinforcing the view that the NPP’s move was reactionary and ill-considered.
