The Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs has confirmed the payment of allowances to Assembly Members nationwide, amounting to GHC23,621,000 for April and May 2025.
Speaking at a press conference on Monday, July 14, 2025, Minister Ahmed Ibrahim announced that 9,085 Assembly Members are receiving GHC1,300 per month in recognition of their critical roles in local governance.
“Each Assembly Member is being paid one thousand, three hundred Ghana Cedis (GH₵1,300.00) monthly,” the Minister stated.
He emphasized that this initiative fulfills President John Mahama’s promise to provide Assembly Members with the financial and logistical support needed to effectively monitor and oversee government projects at the grassroots level.
“This funding is to empower them to closely track development initiatives and enhance accountability within their electoral areas,” he added.
Minister Ibrahim acknowledged ongoing issues with centralized resource control, which he said has affected the efficiency of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs).
To address these challenges, the government allocated GHC100 million in the 2025 national budget to support local governance operations. As part of this, the Ministry of Finance disbursed GHC25 million on June 18, with GHC23.6 million already transferred to cover Assembly Member allowances for the two-month period.
The Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving service delivery at the local level, pledging continued timely funding to boost the performance and engagement of Assembly Members across the country.
