Minority Chief Whip and Nsawam-Adoagyiri MP, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, has admitted he was caught off guard by President John Mahama’s recent electoral victory, revealing that he only sensed a shift in public sentiment days before the polls.
Speaking in an interview on GTV’s Breakfast Show on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, Annoh-Dompreh reflected honestly on his miscalculation.
“I never thought he was going to win, to be very honest with you,” he said. “I’ve been in politics for a while, and I never saw him winning until about a week before the election. Then the feedback from the constituency made me realize that this thing could go the other way.”
Despite his initial optimism about his party’s chances, the MP said the election outcome was a humbling reminder of where political power truly lies.
“I was confident we were going to win. But it’s also the aspect that humbles you. It’s good for every politician to be surprised by the people. You come to appreciate that the real source of your power is not yourself—it’s the people.”
Annoh-Dompreh also expressed concern about the short-term thinking he sees in some political decisions being made, suggesting a lack of long-term vision.
“Some of us are so vulnerable; we don’t learn. In a moment, it will change again if you don’t learn. Some of the decisions being made give me the impression that these people are not really in it to sustain a reign, but rather to perform one or two things and call it a day.”
He cautioned his fellow politicians to reflect more deeply, warning that public trust is wearing thin.
“The public seems to be losing confidence in politicians,” he said. “This time, the Ghanaian people have given huge confidence in this new administration—187 MPs against 88. That is an attraction. And that’s a referendum on our reign.”
He ended with a cautious outlook on the future of the Mahama-led government.
“Expectations are high. I don’t know if they are willing to meet those expectations. Maybe we’ll give them some time and see.”
