The Bono Regional Security Council, led by its Chairman and Bono Regional Minister, Hon. Joseph Akwaboah Addae, has embarked on a high-level inspection tour of the Sunyani–Atronie and Sunyani–Berekum roads following a surge in armed robbery cases along these routes.
The visit, which took place earlier today, saw the participation of top security officials including the Regional Police Commander and the Commanding Officer of the 3rd Battalion of Infantry (3BN). The inspection comes in response to increasing public concern over the deteriorating security situation on these critical road corridors.
“These roads are vital to the region’s socio-economic activities, and ensuring the safety and security of our people remains our top priority,” Hon. Akwaboah Addae stated during the inspection. He assured residents that the Regional Security Council is taking decisive steps to combat criminal activities and restore public confidence.
As part of the response measures, the Minister revealed that surveillance cameras have already been installed along the Atronie–Sunyani and Keyaase–Berekum stretches. These installations, he said, will enhance real-time monitoring and facilitate swift action against criminal elements.
However, many drivers and commuters have linked the spike in robberies to the poor state of the roads, which they say slows down vehicles and creates ideal conditions for ambushes. “We are really worried every time we use these roads. The bad condition of the road has created a perfect environment for the robbers to attack us,” one concerned driver told reporters.
Residents of Atronie and other affected communities have echoed similar sentiments, calling for urgent intervention. Some lament that the insecurity and poor road conditions have forced transport operators to either charge higher fares or avoid the route altogether, leaving many stranded and isolated.
“We can’t continue like this. The government must act fast—fix the roads and protect us,” a resident pleaded.
The Bono Regional Security Council says it remains committed to working closely with all stakeholders to address the twin challenges of insecurity and infrastructure decay. Authorities have pledged to step up patrols, improve road visibility, and accelerate collaborative efforts with local communities to safeguard lives and property.
