Frank Davies, Chairman of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Constitutional and Legal Committee, has expressed concerns regarding the process by which Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo was suspended by President John Dramani Mahama.
In an interview with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Eyewitness News on Thursday, April 1, Davies criticized the handling of the matter, especially how it has unfolded publicly, cautioning that it could undermine judicial independence.
“The Chief Justice’s removal has now become a matter for public debate, with key government figures already suggesting she will be ousted,” he remarked.
Davies emphasized that while public officials are not exempt from accountability, any investigation must adhere strictly to legal procedures.
“No executive officer is above accountability or immune from investigation, but the process must be lawful and transparent. Why are people rushing to conclusions and making unfounded claims? Is this how we respect judicial independence?” he questioned.
President Mahama suspended Chief Justice Torkornoo on Tuesday, April 22, after a prima facie case was established from petitions filed by private citizen Daniel Ofori, senior police officer Ayamga Akolgo, and the advocacy group Shining Stars of Ghana. A five-member committee has been formed to probe the allegations.
