Franklin Cudjoe, President of policy think tank IMANI Africa, has taken a jab at former Communications Minister Ursula Owusu-Ekuful regarding the controversial KelniGVG contract. He is demanding accountability for the significant sums the government has paid to the company over the years, despite what he describes as a lack of tangible results.
Cudjoe is urging the current Communications Minister to terminate the contract, which he argues has brought no measurable benefit to Ghana. According to him, the $179 million already paid should be reclaimed from Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, insisting that she ignored repeated warnings from industry experts about the deal’s risks.
“Ursula Owusu, where is our $179 million? Sam George, cancel the $179m KelniGVG heist,” Cudjoe posted on social media, calling for urgent action.
Background on the KelniGVG Deal
The KelniGVG contract, initially pegged at $89 million, drew heavy criticism from its inception due to its resemblance to previous controversial agreements the government signed with Subah Infosolutions and Afriwave Telcom Ltd in 2010 and 2016.
It was subject to several legal challenges, with allegations of corruption and shady dealings surrounding the revenue monitoring arrangement. IMANI Africa led much of the opposition to the deal, voicing concerns over data privacy and questioning the credibility and necessity of KelniGVG’s involvement.
