Effutu MP and Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has clarified that the Minority in Parliament supports accountability but insists it must be pursued within the bounds of due process.
His remarks follow an attempted invitation by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) to question Assin South MP, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, which has sparked political tension.
Speaking on Joy FM’s *Midday News* on Thursday, April 10, Afenyo-Markin voiced concerns over how some members of the opposition are being treated. He stressed that while accountability is essential, it should not come at the cost of fairness, justice, or the rule of law.
“We are not against accountability,” he stated, “but due process demands that things be done the right way.”
Referring specifically to Ntim Fordjour’s case and other instances affecting his party, Afenyo-Markin claimed that several members are being unfairly targeted under the pretext of accountability.
He also condemned efforts to silence critics and intimidate voices raising concerns about national matters, describing such behavior as undemocratic.
Warning against a dangerous trend of political vindictiveness, he urged the government not to repeat the mistakes of past authoritarian regimes.
Afenyo-Markin appealed directly to President John Dramani Mahama to intervene and restrain certain individuals within his administration who, in his view, are acting in ways that compromise democratic principles.
“These hawks in government must be called to order. Ghana doesn’t need them,” he concluded.
