At a crucial meeting of the National House of Chiefs on February 13, 2025, the Minister of Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs, Hon. Ahmed Ibrahim, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening the chieftaincy institution. Addressing the esteemed members, including Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II, President of the National House of Chiefs, the minister outlined key initiatives aimed at resolving chieftaincy disputes, improving allowances for chiefs, and enhancing the legal framework governing traditional leadership.
Hon. Ahmed Ibrahim emphasized the government’s intention to empower the Judicial Committees of the National and Regional Houses of Chiefs to adjudicate disputes more effectively. Recognizing the burden of succession conflicts, destoolment issues, and land disputes, he assured traditional leaders that the government would provide adequate resources to expedite resolutions. He also announced plans to train non-lawyer members of the Judicial Committees in adjudication processes, ensuring efficiency in handling cases.
In a significant policy shift, the minister disclosed that the government is considering revising monthly allowances for chiefs and queen mothers. “Government is exploring the possibility of providing a more sustainable living allowance that reflects the invaluable role of traditional rulers in national development,” he stated.
Furthermore, the minister reiterated the administration’s commitment to amending Section 63(d) of the Chieftaincy Act, 2008 (Act 759), which had previously been struck down by the Supreme Court. The amendment would empower chiefs to summon individuals engaged in harmful practices such as illegal mining, thereby strengthening their role in environmental conservation and local governance.
Hon. Ahmed Ibrahim urged the traditional authorities to contribute to the ongoing constitutional review process, ensuring that their perspectives are incorporated into national governance reforms. He assured them that the government recognizes the significance of chieftaincy in fostering peace, unity, and socio-economic development.
The meeting concluded with the minister reaffirming his commitment to collaborating with traditional authorities to advance the country’s progress.
