The government has expressed deep regret over the tragic loss of eight lives following a violent clash at a mining site in Obuasi. The deceased are believed to have been illegal miners, according to preliminary reports.
In response to the incident, President John Dramani Mahama has called for an immediate and thorough investigation to uncover the circumstances that led to the clash. He emphasized the importance of holding those responsible for unlawful actions accountable to ensure justice is served.
In a statement issued on Sunday, January 19, 2025, the presidency directed the management of AngloGold Ashanti to fully cover the medical expenses of the injured individuals and provide support for the burial arrangements of those who lost their lives.
Additionally, security agencies have been tasked with restoring peace in the affected area and implementing measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
The government has reaffirmed its commitment to addressing the issues surrounding illegal mining and ensuring that such tragic events do not recur.
