The Minority in Parliament has condemned the government’s efforts to rename the Ho Technical University after Ghanaian composer Ephraim Amu, labeling it as unauthorized.
Initially brought to public attention in February 2018, the decision has faced backlash from various stakeholders, notably the Asogli State Council, citing a lack of consultation.
In an interview with Citi News, Peter Nortsu Kotoe, the Ranking Member on Parliament’s Education Committee and MP for Akatsi North, criticized the government’s failure to introduce a bill for the name change, deeming it illegal.
“It contravenes the law governing university establishment, which clearly specifies the university’s name in section one. Hence, any unilateral attempt to alter it is unlawful,” he stated.
The Chiefs of the Asogli State, in a press conference on Monday, vehemently opposed the proposed renaming of Ho Technical University after Dr. Ephraim Amu. They expressed profound disappointment with both the government and the university’s governing council for proceeding without engaging key stakeholders, particularly the Asogli State Council, the custodians of the land.
The Asogli State Council denounced the decision as regrettable, poorly conceived, and disrespectful, highlighting the failure to consider the viewpoints of those directly impacted.
