Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has called upon the Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, to implement robust measures aimed at ensuring the tranquility of the upcoming 2024 general elections.
Emphasizing that Ghana has matured as a nation, the Asantehene stressed the need for proactive measures to be instituted to prevent disruptions typically associated with electoral processes.
The Asantehene conveyed this message during a courtesy call by the Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, at the Manhyia Palace as part of his visit to the Ashanti region.
“In this election year, I urge you all to take necessary measures to secure peace. It is not our first time voting; we must ensure measures are in place to maintain peace during the upcoming election. Safeguard the nation, as it is your responsibility to do so,” urged the Asantehene.
Additionally, he charged the police force to implement stringent measures to combat the challenges posed by illegal mining, which has resulted in the degradation of water bodies and forest reserves.
“There have been recent cases of illegal mining posing a significant challenge. I implore you all to assist in putting an end to this practice, as it is adversely affecting our lands and water bodies,” he added.
In response, IGP Mr. Dampare assured the Asantehene of the police force’s commitment to sustaining peace in the country. He outlined specific measures in place to enhance the security of Ghanaians and expressed gratitude to the Asantehene for his significant support in the nation-building efforts.
