Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyemang Badu II, Dormaahene, expressed strong condemnation for the reported arrests and alleged assaults of Democracy Hub members during the #OccupyJulorbiHouse protest by the Ghana Police Service.
While installing chiefs in Dormaa Ahenkro on Monday, September 24, 2023, Dormaahene underscored the importance of upholding fundamental human rights, particularly the freedom of assembly, which includes the right to participate in processions and demonstrations.
In a press release dated September 25, 2023, the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) echoed Dormaahene’s sentiments, stating, “There is absolutely no justification for the alleged heavy-handed and excessive response by the Ghana Police Service personnel towards the demonstrators.”
These concerns arise following the arrest of members of Democracy Hub during the #OccupyJulorbiHouse demonstration on Thursday, September 21, 2023. The police had filed a court application and successfully served organizers of Democracy Hub, a group planning a demonstration near the Jubilee House from Thursday, September 21, to Saturday, September 23, 2023.
