Asante Akim North Member of Parliament, Kwame Andy Appiah-Kubi, has endorsed the call for lifestyle audits to be conducted on all government appointees. The suggestion for such audits was initially proposed by Public Policy Analyst Professor Enoch Opoku Antwi as a measure to ensure accountability among Ministers, Members of Parliament (MPs), and public servants.
Prof. Antwi highlighted that Ghana possesses laws intended to hold public officers accountable, such as the asset declaration law, which mandates them to declare their properties. However, he pointed out that the enforcement of these laws is lacking, and no regular verification of the declared assets occurs.
In response to the call for lifestyle audits, both Professor Enoch Opoku Antwi and MP Kwame Andy Appiah-Kubi expressed their support for the measure. During separate interviews on TV3, they emphasized the need to audit all public officials to ensure transparency and adherence to the law.
MP Andy Appiah-Kubi went further by welcoming searches of the homes of all appointees and politicians, including himself. He asserted that he is fully willing to cooperate with any investigation and invited anyone to search his residence without hesitation.
The discussions on lifestyle audits gained traction following the resignation of former Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, Madam Cecilia Abena Dapaah. Her resignation came shortly after the public discourse regarding stolen cash, totaling $1 million, €300,000, and undisclosed Ghana Cedis. President Akufo-Addo accepted her resignation while acknowledging her excellent and productive work during her tenure.
The matter of the stolen monies is currently before the court, and the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OPS) conducted a search at Madam Abena Dapaah’s home, resulting in significant findings. She expressed her confidence in being fully exonerated from all allegations and pledged her cooperation with state agencies during the investigation.
The calls for lifestyle audits aim to promote accountability and integrity in public service, ensuring that public officials adhere to the laws and principles they are entrusted to uphold.
