The ruling government has debunked claims that the sudden U turn of government from what is dubbed as “Ghana Beyond Aid” doesn’t means resorting to the IMF for an economic bailout in the current ripping economic woes meant government has abandoned the Ghana beyond aid agenda .
The Ghana Beyond Aid was a visionary policy of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to build a country a Ghana where the masses have a greater access to quality education, training, and productive employment; where absolutely no individual will enjoy the good side of life and can access to the necessities of life not excluding good health care, water, sanitation, and decent housing in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
It is believed to centered on values, mindset and attitudinal changes that cushions the environment for pursuing rapid development, rather than a mere list of projects to be implemented.
Concerning this initiative, the President’s aim was to ultimately change the fortunes of Ghana into an aid-free country.
But on the verge of excessive borrowing which has increased Ghana’s total debt stock to some GH¢391.9 billion as at March 2022, there are absolute suggestions that the Ghana Beyond Aid mantra is only a slogan for political expediency especially as the country has resorted to the IMF for economic intervention.
Responding to these claims, the incumbent indicated that it has not abandoned its pursuit of a Ghana Beyond Aid.
A Press release from the Ministry of Finance detailed that Ghana has resorted to the IMF because the global world has been hit with major setbacks which have affected the country negatively.
“Countries go to the IMF for support when they face challenges and want the needed support to undertake its economic programme but lack the required funding,” the statement said.
An IMF programme, the statement noted, is expected to give the country the financial freedom to pursue stronger structural reforms that will eventually help Ghana achieve the targets set out in the Ghana Beyond Aid charter
