Former President John Dramani Mahama has reacted to the Supreme Court’s decision against Assin North MP James Gyakye Quayson.
The Supreme Court, in a 5:2 majority decision on Wednesday, April 13, 2022, barred James Gyakye Quayson from representing Assin North in Parliament.
The Court ordered James Gyakye Quayson to resign as Member of Parliament for the Assin North constituency and barred him from performing parliamentary duties.
The decision enraged James Gyakye Quayson, the majority of his constituents, and a large number of National Democratic Congress (NDC) sympathizers and Party members.
In response to the decision, the Former President stated that he does not understand how an MP can be restrained from carrying out his duties when the substantive case to determine his legitimacy has not been decided.
He expressed concern, asking if the outcome of the substantive case had been predetermined against him.
Further explaining, John Dramani Mahama stated that people’s representation is at the heart of our democracy. Any decision that denies citizens representation is a travesty of justice and a slap in the face to our democracy.
