Ghanaian Gospel Icon Yaw Sarpong Dies

Renowned Ghanaian gospel music pioneer and founder of the Asomafo gospel ensemble, Yaw Sarpong, has passed on.

His death was confirmed to the media by his manager, Nana Poku Ashis, though official details regarding the cause and circumstances are yet to be released.

The sad news comes just weeks after the death of Maame Tiwa, a prominent and longtime member of the Asomafo group, a loss that sent shockwaves through the gospel music community.

For several years, Yaw Sarpong had been dealing with health challenges, which occasionally kept him away from the public eye as he sought medical care and recovery.

Celebrated as one of the most impactful figures in the evolution of Ghanaian gospel music, Yaw Sarpong gained widespread recognition as the leader of Yaw Sarpong and Asomafo. The group played a major role in defining contemporary Akan gospel music with its spiritually grounded lyrics and disciplined musical approach.

Throughout his illustrious career, Yaw Sarpong and Asomafo released numerous timeless gospel classics such as Wo Haw Ne Hwan, Tie Obiaa, Aduro Yesu, and Awurade Kasa, songs that continue to resonate in churches nationwide.

In recognition of his immense contribution to gospel music, Yaw Sarpong was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2025 Telecel Ghana Music Awards
