The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has promoted 35 police officers in recognition of their role in the arrest of suspects linked to the high-profile Adabraka gold robbery in Accra.
In a statement issued by the Ghana Police Service on Thursday, January 15, the promotions were awarded to the officers for their exceptional professionalism, dedication, and teamwork during operations that led to the successful apprehension of the suspects.
The statement said the IGP, together with members of the Police Management Board (POMAB), congratulated the officers on their elevation and urged them to regard the promotions as a call to higher responsibility, leadership, and accountability in the performance of their duties.
“The Ghana Police Service remains committed to recognising merit and rewarding excellence as a means of strengthening professionalism, boosting morale, and enhancing effective policing across the country,” the statement added.
The Adabraka gold robbery occurred in November 2024 when a group of armed men stormed a jewellery shop in broad daylight.
Viral videos from the incident showed at least five heavily built men wielding firearms and firing shots into the air as they carted away stolen items, including bags believed to contain cash, into a silver-coloured vehicle.
Eyewitnesses said the suspects threatened bystanders, ordering them to comply while continuing to fire warning shots. In one instance, the robbers were seen scattering some of the stolen money as they fled the scene.
The incident left at least one person injured after being struck by gunfire. Footage later showed residents rushing the injured individual to a hospital for medical attention.
Police investigations have since led to the arrest of three suspects, with the promoted officers playing key roles in the intelligence gathering and operations that resulted in their capture.
