The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has justified its decision to commence disciplinary proceedings that could lead to the expulsion of former Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, following comments in which he described the party as “fake.”
Speaking on Point of View on Channel One TV on Monday, January 12, Professor Frimpong-Boateng argued that the present state of the NPP no longer reflects the ideals of the party he once knew, claiming it has deviated from its founding principles.
In response, the NPP’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, told Citi News on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, that the party’s actions are grounded in its constitution and internal rules.
Mr Kodua explained that the party is governed by clearly defined regulations, and when a member makes statements deemed to constitute misconduct, leadership is obliged to follow established disciplinary procedures.
He described Professor Frimpong-Boateng’s remarks as careless and disappointing, particularly coming from someone of his standing and experience.
According to the General Secretary, such comments pose a serious threat to party cohesion, values, and public perception, making it necessary for the leadership to act in line with its constitutional mandate.
Mr Kodua further noted that, under normal circumstances, the comments could have warranted immediate expulsion, or even a voluntary resignation by the former minister. However, he stressed that the party opted to follow due process by invoking Article 444 of the NPP constitution, which empowers the National Executive Committee to initiate expulsion proceedings.
He reiterated that the NPP remains committed to fairness and adherence to its internal regulations, even in matters involving senior and high-profile party members.
