Former Minister of Finance and Member of Parliament for Karaga, Dr Mohammed Amin Adam, has downplayed the government’s announcement on the repayment of energy sector debts, arguing that such payments should not be overly publicised.
His comments follow a statement by the Ministry of Finance declaring that the government had decisively addressed Ghana’s energy sector debt, describing the move as a major step towards restoring financial stability and boosting international confidence.
In the statement issued on Monday, January 12, the Ministry said the John Mahama administration had, as of December 31, 2025, repaid a total of US$1.47 billion to rescue and reset the energy sector.
Reacting to the announcement in a Facebook post, Dr Amin Adam said the repayment was not unprecedented, noting that similar payments had been made in the past without fanfare.
According to him, the 2025 Budget presented by the current NDC government shows that the previous NPP administration paid about US$1.4 billion in energy sector debts in 2024 but did not seek publicity over the exercise.
He accused the government of turning routine fiscal actions into public relations exercises, insisting that settling energy sector debts should be seen as a normal responsibility of government rather than an achievement requiring hype.
