NPP’s Return to Power Does Not Depend on Mahama’s Failure — Bawumia Aide

A political aide to former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has rejected claims that the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) is hoping for President John Dramani Mahama to fail in order to reclaim political power.

Kofi Tonto stated that the NPP has welcomed recent positive developments under the Mahama administration, including a slowdown in inflation, strengthening of the cedi, and reductions in fuel prices, noting that such improvements are beneficial to all Ghanaians regardless of political affiliation.

Speaking on JoyNews’ The Pulse on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, Mr Tonto emphasised that the NPP’s prospects of returning to government are not tied to the downfall of the current administration.

He explained that Ghana’s democracy does not operate on the assumption that one political party must fail for another to succeed, adding that voters are capable of making nuanced judgments.

Mr Tonto stressed that national development should always take precedence over partisan interests, arguing that the country cannot afford to stagnate simply for political gain.

He further stated that President Mahama’s success is in the collective interest of all citizens and insisted that the NPP has no desire to see the government perform poorly.

According to him, even if the President achieves measurable successes, Ghanaians still reserve the right to opt for alternative leadership in future elections based on vision, ideas, and long-term direction.

Mr Tonto concluded that political competition should be rooted in offering superior policies and leadership options, rather than wishing failure on an incumbent government.
