Ernest Kofi Owusu-Bempah Bonsu, a Senior Aide to Kennedy Agyapong and Deputy Director of Communications of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has warned that the party could struggle to craft a compelling campaign message ahead of the 2028 general elections if the Ghanaian cedi continues its current strong performance under the present administration.
According to Mr Owusu-Bempah Bonsu, the improving stability of the local currency would significantly weaken any economic criticism the NPP might seek to advance, particularly if former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia emerges as the party’s flagbearer.
He noted that currency stability has historically been a major political talking point in Ghanaian elections, and a sustained recovery of the cedi would deprive the NPP of one of its strongest arguments against the governing party.
Mr Owusu-Bempah Bonsu further suggested that the situation could complicate efforts to distinguish Dr. Bawumia’s economic credentials from prevailing realities, making it difficult for the party to convince voters with familiar narratives.
He therefore called on the NPP to begin rethinking its long-term communication strategy and policy focus, stressing the need for fresh ideas that go beyond exchange rate debates to remain electorally competitive in 2028.
He added that political messaging must evolve with changing economic conditions, cautioning that reliance on past arguments in a shifting economic landscape could leave the party at a disadvantage.
