The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has called for the Bank of Ghana (BoG) to be protected from political interference, stressing the need to preserve the central bank’s independence and credibility.
He made the appeal during a courtesy visit to the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Johnson Asiama, on Wednesday, January 7, 2026.
Describing the BoG as a vital national institution whose decisions affect every citizen, the Asantehene urged political actors to exercise caution and restraint in their engagement with the central bank.
According to him, the Bank of Ghana should ideally function as a neutral and secure institution, free from the pressures and conflicts of partisan politics, warning that actions that undermine its integrity could have serious consequences.
He appealed to political leaders across the divide to allow the Governor and his team the space, respect and support required to carry out their professional responsibilities without undue influence.
Otumfuo Osei Tutu II emphasized that the Bank of Ghana belongs to the entire nation, noting that its success would lead to prosperity and stability, while its failure could endanger the economy.
He expressed confidence in the current leadership of the Bank of Ghana, stating his belief that the institution is well positioned to fulfil its mandate in the interest of national economic growth and stability.
