Dropping Bawumia could consign NPP to 12 years in opposition – Amin Adam

The Member of Parliament for Karaga, Dr Mohammed Amin Adam, has warned that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) could face an extended period in opposition if it abandons Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as its flagbearer for the next presidential election.

Speaking on the JoyNews AM Show on Wednesday, January 7, Dr Amin Adam said the party’s own electoral history demonstrates that continuity in leadership has often paid off, particularly when candidates are given a second chance after an initial defeat.

He pointed to former Presidents John Agyekum Kufuor and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as examples, noting that both men lost their first presidential contests but later won after the party retained them as candidates.

According to him, the same approach should be applied to Dr Bawumia, arguing that replacing him after a first loss could amount to an unnecessary gamble.

Dr Amin Adam cautioned that choosing a new candidate could give the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) a strategic edge, especially if the party presents a fresh contender with strong backing.

He said that even if former President John Dramani Mahama does not contest again, he is likely to support and mobilise resources behind a new NDC candidate.

The Karaga MP warned that if the NPP experiments while the NDC successfully fields a new candidate, the party risks remaining in opposition for as long as 12 years.

He added that such a scenario could seriously undermine party unity and long-term stability, stressing that retaining Dr Bawumia represents the most secure route for the NPP to reclaim power.
