Ernest Kofi Owusu-Bempah Bonsu, a Senior Aide to Kennedy Agyapong and Deputy Director of Communications of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has admitted that discussions around the performance of the Ghanaian cedi have become uncomfortable for him, citing the party’s missed opportunity to stabilise the currency while in government.
According to Mr Owusu-Bempah Bonsu, the current performance of the cedi highlights what he described as a lost chance by the NPP to implement measures that could have delivered similar results during its tenure in office.
He noted that the improvement in the local currency under the present administration has shifted public discourse and made it difficult for the party to credibly engage in debates about exchange rate management.
Mr Owusu-Bempah Bonsu stressed that the issue goes beyond partisan politics, arguing that the situation calls for honest reflection within the party about past economic decisions and strategies.
He added that acknowledging these shortcomings is necessary if the NPP hopes to rebuild trust and develop more effective economic policies and messaging for the future, rather than avoiding the conversation altogether.
