Ernest Kofi Owusu-Bempah Bonsu, a Senior Aide to Kennedy Agyapong and Deputy Director of Communications of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has stated that the recent performance of the Ghanaian cedi under President John Dramani Mahama poses a challenge for defending the economic record of former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
According to Mr Owusu-Bempah Bonsu, the relative stability and improved outlook of the local currency under the current administration has made it increasingly difficult for party communicators to justify or explain the economic outcomes recorded during the period when Dr. Bawumia was widely regarded as being in charge of economic management.
He noted that currency performance remains a key benchmark for many Ghanaians in assessing economic leadership, adding that comparisons between the two administrations are now unfavourable to the NPP’s previous economic narrative.
Mr Owusu-Bempah Bonsu argued that the present situation weakens attempts to portray Dr. Bawumia as an economic manager with superior credentials, especially when public perception is shaped by day-to-day realities such as exchange rate stability and cost of living.
He therefore urged the party to be honest in its internal assessments and adapt its communication strategy to current economic developments, warning that ignoring prevailing realities could further erode public trust ahead of future elections.
He stressed that political credibility depends on aligning campaign messages with observable economic conditions rather than relying on rhetoric that no longer resonates with the electorate.
