BoG, GoldBod, Finance Ministry to Review Gold Purchase Programme – Bank of Ghana Governor

Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr. Johnson Asiama, has announced that the Central Bank, together with the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) and the Ministry of Finance, will convene a specialised policy workshop aimed at enhancing the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme (DGPP) to meet global best practices.

Speaking at the 77th Annual New Year School at the University of Ghana on Tuesday, January 6, Dr. Asiama noted that the DGPP was introduced at a time of severe economic challenges and has since played a meaningful role in stabilising confidence in the economy.

He explained that the upcoming workshop will bring together experts, policymakers, and industry practitioners to explore how the programme can be refined and strengthened.

“The Bank of Ghana, in collaboration with GoldBod and the Ministry of Finance, intends to host a focused policy workshop to assess how this national priority can be improved in line with international standards,” he stated.

Dr. Asiama highlighted that, despite the hurdles, the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme has supported economic recovery and improved coordination across Ghana’s gold value chain.

He pointed out that GoldBod’s institutional role has enhanced collaboration within the sector, while the introduction of a gold-based FX auction system has created a more transparent and structured way of managing gold-related foreign exchange flows.

Looking ahead, Dr. Asiama stressed that the programme must be firmly rooted within the broader Government of Ghana framework to ensure long-term sustainability.

“In 2026, Your Excellency, the G4R programme must be more strongly anchored as a national priority, with responsibilities shared so its sustainability is not placed on any single institution,” he told President John Dramani Mahama.

He added that the BoG encourages open, evidence-driven dialogue on major national policy initiatives like the DGPP.

“We welcome informed debate, rigorous analysis, and diverse perspectives on critical programmes such as the DGPP,” he said.
