Dormaahene Calls on Citizens to Hand Over Illegal Firearms Before Jan. 15 Amnesty Deadline

The President of the Bono Regional House of Chiefs, Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyemang Badu II, has called on all individuals in possession of illegal firearms to voluntarily surrender them before the January 15, 2026 deadline under the ongoing Gun Amnesty Programme.

Speaking during the commissioning of the Bono Regional Command of the National Signals Bureau (NSB) in Sunyani by Interior Minister Hon. Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, the Dormaahene emphasised that the programme provides citizens with a safe and legal opportunity to hand over unregistered or illicitly held weapons without fear of prosecution.

He noted that the initiative, which also includes restrictions on the importation, sale, and use of arms during traditional festivities, is part of a broader effort to reduce the proliferation of illegal firearms in the country, enhance public safety, and promote national security and social cohesion.

“The Gun Amnesty Programme is a critical national initiative aimed at significantly lowering the number of illicit arms in circulation and creating a safer environment for all Ghanaians,” the Dormaahene said.

Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak urged citizens to support the newly commissioned NSB Bono Regional Command, describing it as a shared resource for regional security and prosperity. “It takes a whole region to secure its peace,” he said.

The Bono Regional Minister, Joseph Addae Akwaboa, described the NSB command as a landmark facility and a key part of government efforts to strengthen Ghana’s security architecture.

The National Signals Bureau, Ghana’s signals intelligence agency, is tasked with collecting, analysing, and disseminating foreign signals intelligence to support national security decision-making. Its functions include conducting cybersecurity operations, providing technical security support to government agencies, and assisting law enforcement through communications interception and analysis.
