Ofori-Atta hires top US lawyers to fight extradition – Ayine

Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr Dominic Ayine, has disclosed that former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta has retained some of the best legal minds in the United States to challenge efforts to extradite him to Ghana.

Dr Ayine made this known during the government’s Accountability Series on Thursday, December 18, 2025, after Ghana formally submitted an extradition request to US authorities.

“The subject of an extradition will naturally contest it in court. I have been informed that Mr Ofori-Atta has engaged some of the top lawyers in the US with extensive experience to defend him,” Dr Ayine said, adding that this development does not deter Ghanaian authorities.

He explained that extradition cases in the United States are handled through the federal court system and can go through several stages of judicial review.

“He has the right to challenge any decision before the federal district court, the circuit court and, ultimately, the US Supreme Court if he is dissatisfied,” the Attorney General noted.

While conceding that the legal process could take considerable time, Dr Ayine said the government remains confident in the strength of its extradition request, stressing that the outcome will ultimately be determined by the US judicial authorities.
