Okada Bill Will Improve Road Safety, Boost Youth Employment – Ibrahim Adjei

Ibrahim Adjei, a former Secretary at the Office of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has called on the public to support the Road Traffic Amendment Bill, 2025, describing it as a crucial step towards regulating commercial motorcycle operations and improving road safety in Ghana.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Monday, December 15, Mr Adjei said the proposed legislation provides a clear legal framework that will encourage Okada riders to operate within the law, helping to curb indiscipline and reduce road accidents.

According to him, formal regulation of commercial motorcycling will not only enhance safety but also create employment opportunities for the youth, while making riders identifiable and accountable for their actions.

Mr Adjei explained that the absence of regulation in the past allowed riders to operate at their own discretion, often resulting in reckless and unsafe practices on the roads. He stressed that the introduction of clear laws would instil discipline and improve compliance with traffic regulations.

He described the passage of the bill as a positive development and pledged his support for it, while urging the government to ensure effective implementation.

“Regulation instils discipline. The passage is a good thing, and we will do our best to support it. We also urge the government to be proactive and to study regulatory frameworks in other countries as reference points,” he said.

The Road Traffic Amendment Bill, 2025, is expected to provide guidelines for licensing, operations, and enforcement in the commercial motorcycle sector as part of broader efforts to improve road safety nationwide.
