The ECOWAS Council of Ministers, meeting in Abuja, Nigeria, has unanimously endorsed President John Dramani Mahama as the sub-region’s sole candidate for the African Union (AU) Chairmanship when the position rotates to West Africa in 2027.
Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, announced the decision on Friday, December 12, noting that the Authority of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government is expected to ratify the endorsement on Sunday.
In a Facebook post, Ablakwa expressed Ghana’s gratitude for the show of confidence in President Mahama.
“Ghana is exceedingly grateful to ECOWAS for the confidence and support for our beloved visionary and Pan-African President, H.E. John Dramani Mahama,” he wrote.
