The Minority in Parliament has intensified its demand for the immediate withdrawal of a notice sent by the Clerk to Parliament to the Electoral Commission (EC) declaring the Kpandai parliamentary seat vacant.
The notice was issued after a Tamale High Court ruling ordered a rerun of the parliamentary election in the constituency.
Minority: Declaration is unconstitutional
Addressing journalists on Wednesday, December 10, Deputy Minority Leader and MP for Asokwa, Patricia Appiagyei, condemned the court’s ruling as selective and cynical, arguing that it sets a “toxic new rule” that threatens Ghana’s parliamentary stability.
She described the notification to the EC as both premature and unconstitutional.
“This premature notice violates the separation of powers and infringes on the people of Kpandai. The notice to the EC must be withdrawn immediately. This is not a partisan play; it’s a call for basic constitutional fidelity and historical consistency,” she stressed.
Madam Appiagyei warned that the Minority would withhold cooperation on government business if the letter is not retracted.
Chaos in Parliament
Tensions boiled over in Parliament earlier in the week when the Minority staged a dramatic protest over the same matter. The caucus:
chanted slogans,
banged tables,
and at one point blocked Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga from speaking.
Their demonstration forced the Speaker to temporarily suspend proceedings.
Though Ayariga was eventually allowed to address the chamber amid persistent noise, parliamentary marshals had to intervene to maintain order.
Despite the chaotic scenes, the Majority continued business and passed several policies without Minority participation.
