The Ministry of the Interior has initiated two separate investigations after allegations emerged that Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng survived two assassination attempts and that a senior officer at the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) was assaulted by police personnel.
The claims were first made public by the OSP’s Director of Strategy, Research, and Communications, Samuel Appiah Darko, who told the Newsfile programme in Accra on December 6 that Mr. Agyebeng had twice been the target of failed assassination attempts while carrying out his official duties.
He also alleged that he himself had been handcuffed and physically assaulted by 17 police officers.
In a press statement released on Monday, December 8, the Ministry said the allegations raise serious national security concerns and could potentially undermine the government’s ongoing anti-corruption efforts. For that reason, preliminary checks have begun.
The Ministry indicated that its initial engagement with Mr. Agyebeng confirmed that the supposed assassination attempts reportedly took place before 2025. It added that neither security agencies nor police stations across the country have any record of the Special Prosecutor filing complaints about threats to his life.
Because of the seriousness of the claims, the Interior Minister has ordered thorough investigations into both matters. One probe will look into the alleged attempts on Mr. Agyebeng’s life, with the Ministry noting that crimes of this nature have no statute of limitations. The second investigation will address Mr. Appiah Darko’s claim that he was assaulted by several police officers.
The Ministry assured the public that the findings will be released once the investigations are concluded. It reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety of all residents in Ghana, stressing that every individual must be able to go about their lawful duties without fear.
