I Didn’t Understand Akufo-Addo’s Leadership – Kufuor

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has expressed disappointment with the performance of the Akufo-Addo administration, particularly in the period following the COVID-19 pandemic.

In an interview with Deloris Frimpong Manso shared on X on December 6, 2025, Kufuor said although President Nana Akufo-Addo’s government began with strong promise, its performance declined after the pandemic.

He revealed that several major decisions were taken without his input and said he found it difficult to understand some of the policies pursued by the former government.

According to Kufuor, this leadership approach played a role in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) defeat in the 2024 general elections.

“During the 2016 elections, they benefitted from my administration’s achievements, but after assuming office, things changed. They started well, and I commend him for handling COVID-19 effectively, but afterwards, I could not understand many of the decisions they were making,” he said.

He specifically cited the bond market interventions and the construction of the National Cathedral, saying he was not consulted and was unaware the project was being funded with public money.

“I thought it was a private project, only to later find out state resources were being used. They even demolished the judges’ building for it, yet the project was never completed,” he added.

Despite his criticisms, Kufuor urged members of the NPP to remain united and committed to the party’s core principles, stressing that honesty and transparency are essential for the party’s political recovery.

“They should remain true to themselves. They may not all be friends, but they are bound by party values, and that unity is what Ghanaians expect,” he said.
