President John Dramani Mahama has applauded the significant progress on the Ofankor–Nsawam Road project and has encouraged contractors to intensify their efforts to complete the work ahead of schedule.
The President toured the site on Wednesday, December 3—exactly 90 days after his last visit—to assess the pace of work on the busy stretch. He recounted the difficulties encountered during his earlier inspection, including stalled work, delayed payments, and challenges with demolitions required for the project to advance.
“When we came, we met a road that was moving at a snail’s pace… one major issue was non-payments for work done for a very long time, so I ordered the Roads and Finance Minister to ensure payment was made. More than $70 million was paid to the contractor,” President Mahama noted.
He said the intervention had unlocked progress, with the contractor now ahead of the original delivery schedule. The contractor had projected completion by July next year, but current performance indicators point to a possible April finish.
“I am quite impressed with the progress that has been made. I will urge the contractor to continue to push hard. If you push hard, you will be able to finish this road and hand it over so that we can use it,” he added.
The Ofankor–Nsawam Road project, which commenced in July 2022, has suffered several delays due to funding constraints, resulting in heavy traffic and prolonged inconvenience for commuters.
President Mahama’s visit reinforces his administration’s commitment to resolving bottlenecks and ensuring timely delivery of key infrastructure projects.
